Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are historically Irish farm dogs.
No royalty here, but a steady, fun loving, often silly diposition that endears them to many a dog lover.
The breed standard calls for a "medium-sized, hardy, well balanced sporting terrier".
Wheatens do well in an urban environment when they have the proper attention.
That attention is a time commitment to socialize, train, exercise and groom the dog. A puppy should go to at least one series of puppy training classes and be exposed to new people and dogs as much as possible. Wheatens are generally quick learners, but their commitment to their lessons is suspect. They also tend to jump up on people and it is not an easy trait to train away. You should expect to exercise your Wheaten on a daily basis. A few blocks up and down the hills in San Francisco does nicely. Grooming is a big committment. Wheatens don't shed, but their coats do mat if they are not combed regularly. Adolescents sometimes need to be thouroughly combed every day. You will likely need a professional groomer's help, but keeping up with the grooming can be part of your quality time with your dog. Wheatens need a lot of attention from their people. And their people need to be steady with consistent behavior, Once you have a Wheaten, you will never be alone in your house again. They will always be at your side as your new trusted, faithful friend. |
